About STARO
The charity's objects are to promote for the benefit of the public the preservation and conservation of the Amazon rainforest, to advance education in the subject and to promote research into the flora and fauna of the Amazon Rainforest and to publish the useful results. Save the Amazon Rainforest Organisation Ltd is a registered charity (registered charity number 1116002) raising awareness of the plight of the Amazon Rainforest and works closely with The Instituto Caiuá and the NTFP Foundation. The Instituto Caiuá is a registered charity and has its main office at Araruama, Lake Region of State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Its goal is the sustainable development of tropical forests, creating an environmental management system involving local residents. The name Caiuá, which in Tupi-Guarani tongue means "one who lives in the forest", refers to life in harmony with nature. The Instituto Caiuá's team of specialists include Bio Chemists, Forest Engineers, and Ethno-botanists. In 2003 ICGA was awarded 'The Letter of Interest' from the National Botanical Research Institute of Brazil based in Rio de Janeiro The NTFP Foundation (Non timber forest products) Foundation supports sustainable rainforest projects mainly in the Brazilian rainforest. It is a registered charity based in Bern, Switzerland. Our Mission TO SUPPORT BRAZIL IN EXPLORING AND PRESERVING THE AMAZON RAINFOREST. TO FOSTER A SUSTAINABLE WAY OF LIVING FOR THE FOREST DWELLERS. What we do:
- We carry out sustainable agricultural projects with the local forest dwellers enabling them to live in harmony with the forest
- We work with the Brazilian people to manage rainforest ecosystems in a sustainable way.
- We provide economic alternatives for the local people, substantially reducing the damage caused by destructive agricultural practices.
- Our purchasing of the land with the IGCA enables these projects to take place.and to create Private Natural Heritage Reserves (RPPN)
- We are collaborating with the Research Institute of the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro.
- We undertake research to identify the needs of the forest dwellers and investigate solutions.
- We prepare strategies and guidelines towards sustainable environmental management of the area.
